Every year, over 100 million monarch butterflies make a remarkable journey from Canada down to the pine tree-clad mountains of Michoacan. A visit to this region outside of Morelia during this astounding migration is an unforgettable experience. Best for those who enjoy a good walk, some early morning hiking at high elevations is required to truly get the best experience with the butterflies.

This 7-hour trip from Zihuatanejo requires 2-3 days. Carlos plans a leisurely trip with stops along the way that offer opportunities to explore Patzcuaro, Santa Clara, Urapan & Morelia.

After spending the night in historical Morelia, it's an early, cool morning trip up the mountain to be a part of the butterflies waking as the air begins to warm. It's unforgettable!

Carlos is happy to make all arrangements for transportation, accommodations, stops along the way and even meal recommendations. No one is ever sorry they took the time and made the effort for their memorable experience with the butterflies!

LA CHOLE / Xihuacan Archaeological Site

Indescribable in every way, this newly discovered civilization is one of Mexico's most exciting archeological sites. Locals have known for years that the site existed, with artifacts unearthing after every big rain. Recently, the site has received much more attention, and the Mexican government has assigned archeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History to excavate and report their findings. Testing has proven the site to be authentic and dates to approximately 3,000 B.C. Currently, efforts have unearthed a gaming arena and major artifacts. No fewer than seven pyramids have been located, along with a plaza and significant artifacts and jewelry from many different cultural groups in Mexico, including Aztec, Toltec, Olmec, Zapotec, Tarascan, and Mayan.

A few locals are available to guide you around the archaeological site, museum, town, and surrounding area. Carlos is one of the few local guides who offer an in-depth look at the work being done and the new findings being unearthed daily. This is truly an experience that few will have before the government takes control of the site in the near future. Don't miss this limited opportunity.

A visit to the small town of La Soledad de Maciel provides insight into the agricultural side of Mexican living and the slow-paced town reflects the heritage of generations past. This is a spiritual, educational, mind-blowing experience and is a definite must-see!
